Howies

For my magazine article I plan to write about ecological clothing and compare them with everyday clothing i.e. how both effect the environment differently. A key company I’ve researched is ‘Howies‘ who believes that:
“A higher quality product will invariably last longer. It will keep on performing as it was designed to for longer before it finally needs replacing. And so over its lifespan it will have consumed less valuable resources than an inferior product that will have been replaced many times.
That’s why we make the best quality products that we know how. Because ultimately the best thing we can do for the environment is to make our stuff last a real long time. The longer our products last the less impact they will have on the environment, and the bigger our smile will be.”
Howies use recycled cotton, organic cord and pledge to give 1% of our turnover or 10% of pre-tax profits (whichever is greater) to grass-root environmental and social projects.

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me…

an Audi R8??? PLEASEEEEEE!

Chocolate Advertisements

A requirement for the magazine project is to design an advert and as my magazine is based on the environment and making the planet greener and a better place, I decided to design a fairtrade chocolate advert. I couldn’t find any fairtrade adverts, but I managed to find some general food advertisements including:

Environmental Magazines.

Here are a few Environmental Magazines I can use for inspiration and influences.

Absolut Ads

I love the Absolut Vodka Ads – They are soo clever, quirky and fun. Here are a few of the 100’s to choose from:

Nina Chakrabarti

I discovered this artist in the book, ‘Hand to Eye’. Nina Chakrabarti is an illustrator who works using pens, felt tips, biros, pencils, inks and her Apple Mac. Her work is intricate and detailed, and has been used by many different well-known companies, including Topshop.

Apple

Ok… although I love everything about Apple, their ipods, macs – even the logo, but why do they have to release new models soooooo often??? I bought an ipod nano to go on holidays during the summer, and 2 weeks later the new ipod nano came out. So annoying. But hey, thats how the cookie crumbles! Anyways, think my mum wants the new ipod touch for christmas. We saw it in Cardiff on the weekend and it is amazing – how technology has changed! Here it is anyway..

Magawebzine Inspiration

I think I’m going to lend on the skills and ideas of Lizzie Finn for my magazine design. The reason for this is my interest in sewing and craft, which I can use to my advantage in creating quite a unique magazine. Unfortunately her website is under construction, but when it’s open again, I’ll upload some images!

I also plan to use badges as a running theme, as they are a youthful and popular means of communication. In my magazine, I’m going to give the readers a free badge as a means of developing a supportive following – a sort of environmentally friendly cult!

Marie O’Connor

Marie O’Connor is a designer, illustrator and fashion consultant that I have just stumbled across. She has her own amazing style, and has also developed her own shoe range for cult label Evisu. Marie O’Connor’s works are often made out of found materials and objects of little value, including fabrics, photocopied graphics, papers, buttons and cotton. Although she doesn’t have a website, I have managed to find some of her work in books and on random sites.

Magazine Covers

Whats the saying… ‘Never read a book by its cover’. But of course we do. And I suppose it’s the same with magazines. You are obviously more likely to buy a magazine that appeals to you and matches interests that you have. Here are a few I’ve just stumbled accross!
